Two stroke multi-cylinder sidecar track racers

In the seventies and eighties two stroke multi-cylinders were common in sidecar track racing. In Germany they used König and homemade Yamaha triples as first made by Rudi Kurth. Later Suzuki GT750 and Yamaha TZ500 and 750 were used. in 1980 multi-cylinders were banned.

De Jager 500 boxer

The Dick de Jager 500cc four cylinder boxer two stroke is a very rare beast. As far as I know there exists only one engine. The König crankcases are known for weak casting and prone to crack. So de Jager decided to make a beter crankcase, the barrels are from Yamaha and the crank is a modified König one. The engine delivers 111 hp. Owner Luc de Smet from Belgium still races it at classic meetings with his female teammate Zoë Beun.

Kim Newcombe

Born in Nelson, Newcombe grew up in Auckland, then moved to Australia (first Brisbane, then Melbourne) in 1963, and subsequently moved to Europe in 1968. He competed in the 500cc Grand Prix World Championship finishing second to Phil Read in the 1973 season on a König 500 developed completely by himself.
