Suzuki TR500 XR05

Here we have the first ever Suzuki TR 500 XR 05 water-cooled twin-cylinder arrived in Europe. In early 1973, the Suzuki importer SAIAD for Italy receives straight from Japan new 500cc Grand Prix twin-cylinders for Guido Mandracci and Jack Findlay. Of the 17 TR 500 produced by Suzuki, only 5 will be shipped to Europe including 4 for SAIAD. In 70/71, the Suzuki TR 500 are air cooled and are among the fastest 500 of competition, but are not always very reliable. To overcome this, in 1973 the factory starts the XR05, a new water-cooled twin-cylinder competition bike with 5 transfer cylinders of 80 hp with a 6-box and capable of 270 km/h. The first bikes were sent to Europe at SAIAD. Suzuki then created the Suzuki Europa Racing Team led by Hideyuki Miyakawa (general manager), Mario Bagini (race director) and Roberto Patrignani (team manager). In 1973 Jack Findlay will finish the 500 world championship in 5th place and will win the senior TT on the Isle of Man riding the Suzuki.

KTM 250 FRR

The KTM 250 FRR parallel twin.
July 26, 2005 Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM had one of the most remarkable debuts of any racing machine in history when it gave its new KTM Grand Prix 250 its first outing in the hands of Australian rider Anthony West at the British MotoGP round. The 250 class is highly competitive with any one of a dozen riders capable of winning on any day, and a machinery war between Honda and Aprilia that keeps improving the two-stroke breed, minute-by-minute, making it nigh-on-impossible for a new bike to break into the top echelon of 250 racing. So despite KTM’s illustrious off-road racing pedigree, and a fine showing from its recently created 125 roadracer, it was not expected to be competitive for some time yet, given that it had only been ridden ONCE prior to arriving at the Grand Prix. Then West had the new motor seize up in practice at over 200km/h. And then it rained, but West won an Australian dirt track title when he was 15 years old, and is comfortable with a bike sliding. What happened? The runaway leader of the race was Japanese wet weather specialist Hiroshi Aoyama until half race distance, but when Aoyama crashed, “Ant” suddenly found himself in a three way battle for the win. All three riders had near misses as the slippery surface and rain streamlets attempted to catch them out, with de Puniet looking the most likely to crash but eventually taking his first win of the season. In a dramatic final two laps, West fought out a tough duel against De Puniet who won the race by just 1.2 seconds with Stoner in third place. The result was the perfect debut for the new KTM 250 GP bike developed in Austria by the legendary two-stroke engineer Harald Bartol and his team.

VRP500 nr. 002

After a search on the internet I found VRP500 nr. 002, this bike was out of sight for a long time. After speaking to Carlo Verona about this bike he told me that he has built a third bike last year!!
When he started this project way back in 1989, he made 3 frames, tanks and fairings and parts to make 5 engines. So out of the old stock he was able to built another bike. The nr. 001 bike is still in his workshop, this is the bike that Andy Leuthe raced in the 500cc GP class in 1989.

Carlo also made a very nice alloy frame and tank for the Honda CR125 in only 12 units. He was probably the first who ever made an alloy frame for a motocross bike.
